The unsurprising news is out. After marathon talks (c. 20 hours) in Islamabad, the US and Iranian delegations have walked, without a firm deal. Who expected that a deal could be reached quickly given maximalist bargaining positions and a complete absence of trust?
On trust, a caution not to trust the news pouring out of Donald Trump’s ‘Truth Social.’ The latest megaphone blasts claim that Iran is unwilling to give up its NUCLEAR AMBITIONS and won’t re-open the Strait of Hormuz as promised. [1]
Does the Don hold out hope for more negotiations? Nope. Time for more threats, of course. The latest is that the U.S. will blockade the Strait of Hormuz. End Iran’s EXTORTION.
What?
Don’t think that will end the global economic crisis or the spike in gas prices at home, Donald.
Not only will the US blockade the Strait but the Don has stated that the US Navy “ will interdict every vessel in international waters that has paid a toll to Iran.” Just to be clear, “no one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas.” Um, is that legal, Mr. President. Don’t think so. Is it practical. Hah.
Trump claims that “other countries will be involved with this blockade.” Will those pussies in NATO finally stand up? Will the UK send its toy aircraft carriers?
Truth Social ends with this: we are fully “LOCKED AND LOADED and our military will finish up the little that is left of Iran!”
Now that’s a promising basis for a peace deal.
