An excellent account of events, I'll add further comment later, but for now:

[Strangely, Canada was not a signatory,] This is very odd, but I think there's a whole story of its own behind this.

Keyed by a comment on a TimesRadio episode earlier (I'll find and link later). a claim was made by a US academic that (gist) "Canada also wanted to buy Greenland". I had to dig on that, first I'd ever heard of "buy" being used in the approach. But in doing an extensive delve into it via web-search, I see this: Brave AI search for "canada wanted to purchase greenland" (Result truncated for brevity)

[...][While Canada has not made a purchase offer, historical records show that proposals to acquire Greenland for Canada date back over a century, including a 1917 British plan to secure a right of first refusal for Canada.

More recently, a 2021 survey indicated that 85% of Greenlanders expressed interest in a closer relationship with Canada, though Canada has not acted on this.

In 1909, American Robert Stein proposed a complex diplomatic scheme in which Canada would acquire Greenland without cost, through a series of territorial exchanges involving Denmark, Germany, and the United States.

In 1917, the British Empire considered purchasing Greenland for Canada to prevent U.S. acquisition, and reportedly secured a right of first refusal from Denmark, though the legal validity of this claim remains uncertain.

Canada’s interest in Greenland has been framed historically around strategic control of Baffin Bay, Arctic resource development, and strengthening ties with Inuit communities across the North Atlantic.

Despite these historical proposals, Canada has not taken any action to purchase Greenland, and current Canadian policy does not include such a plan.

Greenland’s self-governing status since 2009 means that Denmark cannot unilaterally sell the territory, and any change in sovereignty would require Greenland’s consent.]

[...]

Let's say for now that 'Canada and Denmark have a special relationship' on this, and that in part might have more than a small bearing on Carney's appearing and speaking separately on the matter. I'm watching the media closely for more clues on this.

Btw: Miller is such a ^$*^#@g moron. A quick web-search would show him that Greenland's *European* history far predates that of the US. It's been the domain of the Danes, then Norwegians, then Danes again (courtesy of Sweden) long before the US was established. The real question for Greenland is in fact whether the Europeans predated the Thules...

[a 2021 survey indicated that 85% of Greenlanders expressed interest in a closer relationship with Canada, though Canada has not acted on this]

This is not correct, or at least dated info.

From memory, Canada *has* opened communication between Inuit peoples, not least the direct airflights. More on this later when I can quote reference. This has a great bearing on 'societal claims' of established commonality.

One of many sites on-line describing this:

[...]

[“The launch of this new seasonal route is a direct result of the collaborative agreement forged in 2020, enhancing connections between Canada, Nunavut, and Greenland. We are immensely grateful to Air Greenland for their partnership,” said Johnny Adams, Canadian North’s Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors. “This initiative reflects our shared vision for fostering a rich cultural exchange among Canada, Nunavut, and Greenland, and we look forward to welcoming travellers to partake in this exchange, enriching their lives with the diverse and unique traditions of these captivating regions.”]

Seems the US regime is doubling down:

The White House said on Tuesday: "The president and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the US military is always an option at the Commander-in-Chief's disposal." (Source: BBC)

Cuban ACTIVE MEASURES always set dangerous precedents. (American Negroes dominate the cryptography section of the NSA during the 1920s. LGBTs were acknowledged employees of CIA and NSA during the 30s) It is like rocking the boat on troubled waters. It is always in bad faith. It seeks to subvert democratic governments like those of Canada and USA. The Cuban spies of the Liberal Party have repealed the laws on subversion. Wesley Wark is Cuban ACTIVE MEASURES and he will keep on hurting and destructing American and Canadian national security unless he goes to jail for Cuban political influence agentry understatement for foreign espionage.

Excellent item. And if 🇺🇸 gets Greenland can 🇨🇦's Q Elizabeth Islands be far behind?

Digging on the veracity of Greenlander polls, (Beware of some!) I tripped across this at Euractive:

US envoy says Trump supports independent Greenland, downplays fears of annexation

Landry's remarks on the same day as eight European leaders have urged Washington to respect the territorial integrity of Greenland and Denmark

[An independent Greenland with close economic ties to the United States would serve Washington’s interests and need not be coordinated with European allies, the newly appointed US envoy to Greenland Jeff Landry said on Tuesday.

The remarks come as US President Donald Trump steps up rhetoric on Greenland, arguing the US “needs Greenland for defence”. On Monday, Trump’s deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller questioned Denmark’s sovereignty over the island, an autonomous territory within the Danish realm.]

Even if this statement can be believed, no-one outside of Quislings would based on who it is and their agenda...

Agree. Keep enemies very close., hoping they just Die.

Ken Schultz's avatar

The problem with "hoping they just die" is the same simple question about Venezuela: then what? DJT has decapitated Venezuela- but then what? It appears that the same government structure will remain in place - but then what? You seem to want DJT to "just die" but then what? Is Vance a desirable replacement? And then what?

I get the smart alec impulse- but then what?

the angry thin skinned carrot is a spectacular narcissist, and once removed, it should be far less exhausting trying to deal rationally with the 'then what'. Everything should be more predictable, more stable, more rational and so on.

Ken Schultz's avatar

You offer "should" not "absolutely will". Given that uncertainty, is it just a little bit conceivable that "the devil you know" just might be preferable?

Another Anon's avatar

the devil we know lies with impunity, is vindictive and unpredictable. it is hard to envision a replacement being as much as a cartoon villain, though nothing shocks me anymore.

Ken Schultz's avatar

And what of the devvil(s) you don't know?

Another Anon's avatar

if you are implying that the replacements will somehow be 'worse' I lack the imagination or willingness to picture what could possibly follow that has not already horrified and amused so many of us. JDV is not taken seriously and will not succeed as an heir apparent, nor would many others of the assembled ghouls and sycophants rocketed into positions of authority. you are not seriously suggesting that we continue to tolerate this current regime nonsense in the false hope that there will be a bottom to how low this will continue to sink.

Drokthwart 🇨🇦💪🤛's avatar

Then what? Then we'd have someone else instead of this disruptor. The one positive I can think of for having DJT in place was that that it revealed to all the abject weaknesses of American intitutions, the supposed checks and balances. So get on with dying Trump, you are no longer useful.

Trump’s Venezuela raid is being sold as a clean “win”, but the strategic ledger tells a very different story—and the implications run straight through India.I just broke down how the Maduro operation exposed America’s biggest weaknesses and road‑tested a three‑weapon playbook that’s already live in India’s information space. If you care about India’s strategic autonomy and how power actually operates behind headlines, this is worth a read.👉 Full analysis here:

Sharp analysis of Carney's tightrope walk between maintaining NATO cohesion and responding to Trump's Greenland overreach. The framing around geographic proximity is clever but really it's about strategic value hierarchies in a shifting alliance structure. I've seen similar tensions play out in other allied capitals where leaders try to keep multiple incompatible partnerships viable simultaneosly. The fact that Canada wasnt a signatory on the European statement tells more than any offical readout could.

In case commenters haven't yet caught it, CBC reports:

Greenlandic politician who fought for his people's autonomy wants U.S. to back off

'We have a very serious problem, and we need Canada's support,' says Aqqaluk Lynge

[...]

[I think that all of us in the Arctic must be ready for anything. And I'm sure that Denmark and Canada are talking to each other very closely. We are in a dangerous, very dangerous, situation right now. ]

Note this closely. I highly suspect we're going to be hearing a lot more from this man and other Greenlanders, and Canada and Denmark are working closely behind the scenes on Greenland.
