The conversation feels incomplete without a cost side. Membership presumably means real exercise commitments and interoperability investment, which was the concern in 2014. Perhaps that’s changed. I don’t know. Or maybe we’re just more willing to bear those costs now?

Discouraging military alliances is BAD FAITH. It amounts to weakening Canada's fighting capability if Russia attacks and invades us from the North. I cannot see any good reason why military alliances do no good.

Left slanted (or cuban) political commentaries are dangerous. It is like rocking the boat on troubled waters. It is always in bad faith. It is always in service to cuban ACTIVE MEASURES. -- AFP Sargeant major herminigildo Guillermo, former director, counterintelligence, CSIS on busted cuban spy wesley wark.

Eusebio Ricafort's avatar

It depends. If a person in GOOD FAITH like you considers them then maybe you are correct. But bad bonafides can always prove me right. Since when were Guy Burgess, Ana belen montes and Kim philby in good faith. You can know one by his fruits. Example? Busted caucasian chinese spy Theodore butler. "I'm chinese (spy)" who lost tens of millions of dollars through lawsuits for his constant "you are 666" in the workplace.

Do not alert the enemy (wesley wark, Theodore butler and Michael roche). Why it took me 30 years to burn them can be explained by James angleton

75!! envelopes on Kim philby were discovered inside the CIA vault after 60 years. James knew!

I almost got lucky yesterday. Aim surveillance cameras at me walking side by side with a Caucasian lady at square one mall. Honey traps of various "nationalities" have been stalking me.

It was not you. They were aimed at wesley wark. The pessimist. Negativity in the workplace is a valid ground for rightful dismissal. I wrote them after your post to benefit from the olive color. I apologize. Read again. I edited them.

A good article Wesley and I am in favour of joining JEF. We must diversify Forces engagement from mainly US/Canadian to a broader arrangement with Nordic nations et al.

I took the liberty, once again, to block the comments from the ever present Cuban/conspiracy inspired commenter.

How a poor 4th World country like Cuba where horse drawn carts are common sights can control the American and Canadian government is not surprising. Discipline and strict observance of Party protocol coupled by ideological corruption which money cannot buy are all that the communist have to had to remain confident of the future 2047!

Just as I had tagged chinese spies Michael roche and Theodore butler, "child of God" I also tagged wesley wark "child of god". The results were the same. All of them threw their weights around and damned their pet peeves. Busted chinese spy was stabbed in the back for damning a jew.

W.E. exploited cuban DGI in their extreme animosity for my poem. W.E. tempted cuban Direccion generale inteligencia to get their moles to CUT COUGH CUTE CUMMINGS COOK LOOK. Busted cuban spy wesley wark and busted francophone spy Richard mosley surfaced.

RCMPs (mahar & mooney) who engineered the recruitment of cuban spy wesley wark were NOT moles. They knew their security & intelligence. Wesley was the perfect spy! A Ben [le carre].A practicing homosexual! A covert communist! A cuban spy! A racist! A terrorist (cut). How many CSIS, CSE, RCMP had wesley vouched for and guaranteed. Heap praises to mahar and mooney.

Scott, ask wesley how do you explain this? The damn compromise of genuine CSIS officer phil gurski. No wonder wesley wark was sitting always beside me. He was giving me protection from Phil who thought I was really intelligence chief CPUSA. No wonder wesley "damned" ward elcock. Wesley was throwing his weight around because of my "wesley is a child of god". Just like Kim philby who compromised and murdered 75 MI6 officers when he was head of Soviet division.

Scott, ask wesley, "how do you explain this?" Unless you are a recruit vouched for by wesley.

Naivete caused Soviet spy Kim philby to fool MI6. Naivete caused Soviet spy Maclean to fool his unwitting wife. Naivete caused busted chinese spy and australian prime minister to fool the voters of Australia. I will never run out of glaring examples. " Seize the day, comrades! Shed off your communist past and put on a capitalist face. Go attend CASIS CONFERENCES. Yes, we do not believe in God but neither do we believe in Satan which emboldened communist and cuban spy wesley wark to compromise phil gurski in collaboration with young communist league in university in my defense and also caused wesley to implicitly "damn" ward elcock which was once indictable under the repealed blasphemous libel law. And many many more direct and circumstantial evidence like cuban decrypts or cuban diplomatic mail which were admissible in evidence during the Klaus Fuchs and dreyfuss affair cases.

As Lloyd Axworthy noted in his substack post 2 days ago, Canada's legislation re trade in military goods has a large loophole. It affects the armaments industries that would be funded here by the new Defence and Resilience bank.

Canadian components could be shipped to US armaments industries with no oversight about their implications for human rights, for populations anywhere --- including in Canada.

The Carney government needs to close that loophole, given the capricious and authoritarian nature of the US regime and its violent threats to Canada and people around the world, including Gaza and Lebanon, for example.

A very potent topic. There's always a good outcome when Carney and Stubb are working together. Both loom large as leaders of middle nations on the World scene.

Wark makes excellent points, but something very important is missing. Here's Stubb's post to 'X'

[Truly an honour to host the first-ever JEF Leaders’ Summit in Helsinki.

The Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) is an important part of Finland’s defence cooperation.

At today’s Summit, we discussed the role of the JEF in a changing security environment.

In addition to the leaders of the JEF nations, the meeting was joined remotely by Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy contributed with a pre-recorded video message.

The JEF nations remain committed to supporting Ukraine and strengthening security in Eastern and Northern Europe, all the way to the Arctic.]

https://x.com/alexstubb/status/2037223374322073637

Not mentioned in many references is Poland's association with JEF. The reasons given for 'not being invited to join' are mmmmmm...'curious':

[Instead of formal membership, the JEF nations and Poland agreed to coordinate efforts to target Russia's "shadow fleet" and support Ukraine's defense, reflecting a "coalition of the willing" approach. Leaders at the Helsinki summit noted that enlargement to include Poland was not formally decided, with some officials worrying that adding a large, land-focused power could create political friction within the smaller, flexible coalition. ]

The final paragraph of the summit declaration emphasized the “transatlantic bond” between Europe and the United States and looked forward “to working closely with the incoming U.S. administration on our shared security and defence interests.” The JEF is well placed to strengthen transatlantic relations, too. Re costs. They can be absorbed with rising defense budgets. Overall, a sensible proposal. A group of partners we would like to have.

Bill Mac's avatar

Conceptually, I get that (I agree with the notion) but until one looks at the numbers, the operational capacity, and the logistics of it all, we can't say what is practical, when, or where this fits in the updated priorities list of the armed forces. Seems like a good idea on the surface.

JOHN BERRY's avatar

Need to analyze the degree to which JEF is a NORAD replacement, for Canada. A Choice might be becessary!

Jack's avatar

All good arguments for joining, and now with recruitment being addressed perhaps the concern about being overstretched is less. Certainly the threat environment is not going away!

Grube's avatar

Yes this is a good idea and it does not necessarily deviate from Cdn/USA defence cooperation. Why? Becuase the USA has lots of Arctic territory. Called Alaska. All of the NATO Arctic nations should indeed by cooperating formally with each other. Especially true now since the barriers of Sweden and Finland not being part of NATO is not an issue (since they now are members).

Yes the Cdn membership in this particular “JEF” (there are more than one JEFs) is an obvious option.
