It is implied that short circuiting security protocols at the Winnipeg Lab was justified due to the burdens of “red tape” that stifled innovation and normal progression of information sharing.
Viewed through the lens of intellectual property protection and the dangerous nature of the materials handled, I find that argument self serving and a shade arrogant. The top managers have an obligation to protect IP and to ensure that any transfers of material flow through proper vetted channels. The rules of scientific engagement should be evenly applied regardless of the “star power” involved. To have a “star” from the Winnipeg Lab mysteriously appear on a Chinese patent suggests that more oversight is required, not less.
