I think Truman saw the U.S. leading a coalition. Trump and many in the U.S. today see freeloaders. Vision and reality are somewhere in between. Action not words will change minds.
Yes, "... Trump and many in the U.S. ..." do see freeloaders.
And in the case of Canada they are [please pardon the Trumpism] one thousand per cent correct.
You then go on to say, "Action not words will change minds." Oh, action like meeting NATO targets that Canada agreed to over ten years ago but where we have never come close? Oh, words like "... oh, I don't know, in about 2032 if all goes incredibly well and if you measure the actual expenditures against a 2024 not a 2032 base." Actions and words like those.
Put differently, because of our (in)actions and (deceptive) words Canada is screwed.
As if it hadn't always been America First! As the post makes clear, the new regime understands differently what that means. In the post war era it was clear to the USA that proactive American defense began on other people's borders, not their own. Sad to see those in charge turn their backs on their own soft power, and abdicate collective leadership. Canada has some tough decisions ahead.
Mr Wark should recall that there were many occasions where the United States did not exactly live up to those ideals. Between President Truman's speech in 1947 and President Trumps inaugural speech, how many times did America intervene in other country's internal affairs? How many governments were destabilized? What about the thousands of American lives lost in places live Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq? What about the coup in Ukraine in 2014? Do you not think if we had not interfered in Ukraine's internal affairs, Russia would have invaded? The American people made a decision based on what they thought was best for their nation. I find it hypocritical that the same people who used to condemn America for its chauvinism are now condemning it for becoming more isolationist.

It is amazing what a total nutter can initiate after winning 1.5 of the popular vote.

We need a functioning government first :)
